Unlimited
Girls (2002) is a cult Indian
documentary, that asks the question: What does it mean to be a feminist in
India?
Using an online chat
room as a narrative tool, the director poses as 'Fearless' - a woman, who is
unsure about taking on the 'label' of a feminist, and starts asking questions
that generates a diverse conversation from different kinds of women.
These fictional
conversations are interwoven with conversations with real-life feminists like
Sonal Shukla, Urvashi Butalia, Vina Majumdar and Meena Menon, who share the
real experiences of the anger, the resilience, the struggles and the joys of
being part of the Indian feminist movement
It gives the new
generation of film watchers a look into the work that has gone into the making
of the 'now', the moment we are in today
The simple yet deeply philosophical voice of
Fearless makes palpable all the feelings and thoughts that go behind ' being a
feminist'
The film uses different
narrative forms like parody advertisements, fictionalisation and graphic/
animation- to create a highly evocative experience, that can quite easily serve
as a primer for Indian feminist ideology
